The Instrument

The Conflict LensTM is an empirically-derived online instrument that measures behaviors that participants exhibited in actual conflicts in their past. They are asked to recall two important conflicts in their lives and answer a series of questions about them.

Participants provide background data about themselves and are asked to answer 53 items for each conflict about what they did, felt or thought during the conflict, and 13 items for each conflict about the outcomes of the conflict. The instrument takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

A 12-page computer generated report shows scores on 10 dichotomous behavioral dimensions on a scale from -30 to +30 with 0 as the midpoint. The report also shows if the outcome was constructive or destructive on the same -30 to +30 scale. (Sample Individual Report).

The report compares and contrasts the two conflicts so that participants can see how they behaved similarly or differently depending on the circumstances.

The report also gives participants specific suggestions regarding what they did particularly well and how they might improve in the future. Lastly, the report shows them their actual responses to each of the items which lends content validity and also serves as a guide for future conflict situations.

An Interpretive Guide included with each report gives the definitions for each of the scales and a step-by-step guide to interpretation. A Tips and Tactics Booklet is also included which lists specific behavioral suggestions for improvement on each scale.

There is also a Group Report available which combines the responses of a defined group or team which shows the percentages of who the team was in conflict with (peers, supervisors, direct reports, family and friends, etc.) and what the conflicts were about (resources, values, how work is done, etc.). The report shows the group's average scores on each of the scales, their scores when results were constructive vs. destructive and what their most common behaviors were in constructive and destructive outcomes.  (Sample Group Report).

There is also a Technical Guide which delineates the original research and the validity and reliability of the instrument.
